Water Conservation Tips
Indoor Water Conservation
Prevent water leaks, a 1/32 of an inch drip can waste more than 6,000 gallons of water each month |
Check for toilet tank leaks by adding coffee to the tank, if the tank is leaking, the coffee color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes |
Take shorter showers, 10 minutes or less |
In older homes, install low flow showerheads, low flow toilets |
Save water by shutting off faucet while brushing teeth or shaving |
Operate dishwashers and washing machines when fully loaded |
Purchase front-loading washing machines to save water and electricity |
Outdoor Water Conservation
Vegetation needs only 1/2 to 3/4 inches of water twice a week |
Irrigate for no more than 40 minutes and no less than 20 minutes |
Irrigate yards and lawns before 10:00 am and after 4:00 pm to reduce fungus, disease and save water |
Sweep, don't hose down your driveway |
Plant native vegetation to save on irrigation costs |
Use a hose equipped with an automatic shutoff nozzle |
Consider using a water-saving device on your swimming pool |
Stormwater Runoff Prevention Tips
To minimize amount of fertilizers and pesticides used, plant native trees and plants |
Use natural, organic fertilizers low in phosphorus and use only small amounts |
Clean up driveway spills and leaks with kitty litter and dispose of litter in trash |
Keep grass clippings, leaves and branches away from ditches and storm drains |
Plant native vegetation along the shoreline to help capture stormwater |
Wash vehicles on grassy or mulched areas |
Create swales (low areas) or terracing on your property to catch, store and filter stormwater |
Minimize the amount of impervious surfaces (concrete, asphalt) and encourage the use of pervious surfaces (paving block, mulch, stones) for driveways, walkways and patios |
